A Backyard Wedding in Winnipeg
A Backyard Wedding in Winnipeg, and Everything That Made It Feel Real
There's something about a backyard wedding in Winnipeg that immediately changes the energy of the whole day. When a wedding happens somewhere that actually belongs to someone, the people there don't need to figure out where they belong. They already know. It's less of an event and more of a gathering, and that distinction matters a lot.
This one was exactly that. Ceremony in the backyard, reception under a tent set up right there on the same property. No shuttles, no transitions, just the same group of people moving from one part of the day to the next.
Before the ceremony, they did a first look and exchanged private vows, just the two of them. That quieter version of the moment, before everything opens up and the day gets loud, is often where I see couples most clearly. Then wedding party photos at Birds Hill Park in the middle of the day, with that flat, honest summer light that doesn't hide anything and doesn't need to.
They asked me to photograph their first dance for the first minute or so, and then leave. They wanted that moment for themselves. I stayed long enough to get what I needed, then stepped back. That kind of intentionality says a lot about who a couple is.
The tent reception got loud as the night went on. The groomsmen introduced a door into the evening, kicked it down, and eventually lifted the groom onto it until it broke. The groom was fine. The photos are great.
They left in a rented car, and it made for some of the best frames of the day. A good exit photo has a sense of occasion without being overdressed. This one did.
Nobody was performing. The energy came from the people, not the production. That's harder to pull off than it sounds, and it makes for the best kind of day to photograph.
If you're planning a backyard or outdoor wedding in Winnipeg and want photos that feel like the day actually felt, I'd love to hear about it.
