South Asian Wedding Photographer Winnipeg

Documenting multi-day celebrations with a story-driven approach

South Asian weddings have a level of energy and presence that feels different from anything else I photograph. The colour, the ritual, the way every person present understands that this is a major moment in someone's life and shows up for it fully. I've been shooting weddings since 2010, and in 2024 I was named Canadian Wedding Photographer of the Year. South Asian weddings are some of the most meaningful work I do.

I'm an Indian wedding photographer based in Winnipeg, and I cover the full range of South Asian celebrations, including Sikh, Punjabi, and Hindu weddings, from single-day ceremonies to full multi-day wedding weeks.

I'm Cody Goetz, a documentary photographer. That means I'm watching and waiting, not directing and posing. South Asian weddings move fast and they're layered. There are overlapping events, large families, and moments happening in every direction at once. Photographing them well means knowing when to step in and when to step back, and understanding the rhythm of the day so nothing important gets missed.

THE APPROACH

Why documentary photography works for South Asian weddings

A lot of South Asian weddings involve a photographer who works from a shot list, calls out poses, and moves through the day like a checklist. That's not how I work. My approach is closer to candid wedding photography, staying close and quiet until the moment is already happening.

My job is to stay close, stay quiet, and pay attention. If you're weighing up different photography styles, I wrote about the difference between posed and candid wedding photography and why it matters, especially for weddings with a lot happening at once.

I've spent full wedding weeks with South Asian families, from the Mehndi and Jaggo through to the reception, and what I've found is that the hospitality is extraordinary and the trust runs deep. When a family lets me into their home and their rituals for a week, I take that seriously. I show up early, I stay late, and I don't leave until the day is done. My longest single wedding day with a Sikh family was 15 to 16 hours. That's not unusual for me.

EXPERIENCE

What I've covered

As a South Asian and Indian wedding photographer in Winnipeg, I've covered full Sikh wedding weeks with multi-day coverage across the Mehndi, Jaggo, Maiyan, Choora, wedding day, and reception. I've also photographed Punjabi and Western fusion weddings, as well as Hindu and Western celebrations. Most of the weddings I document span multiple days, often three to six, each with its own pace, traditions, and energy.

Across multi-day South Asian weddings, coverage often includes:

Mehndi
Jaggo
Maiyan
Choora ceremony
Anand Karaj
Baraat
Reception

Every community does things a little differently, and I go into each wedding wanting to understand what matters most to the family, not assuming I already know.

OH. MY. GOODNESS.
This should be no shock but the photos are STUNNING.
I swear, you outdo yourself every. fricking. time.

If you're planning a multi-day celebration and want a photographer who will be there for all of it, I'd love to hear what you're putting together. Coverage for South Asian weddings is quoted based on the full scope of your event, so reach out and we can talk through what makes sense.

THE WORK

South Asian pre-wedding sessions in Winnipeg

A lot of South Asian couples I work with book a pre-wedding session before the wedding week. It's a chance to spend some time together before things get busy, and to get comfortable in front of the camera in traditional outfits before the wedding day itself.

I've shot pre-wedding sessions at May 11 Studio, The Forks, the Exchange District, Assiniboine Park, and Pinawa Dam. If you have a location in mind, bring it. If you're not sure, I'm happy to suggest something based on what you're picturing.

You can read more about what a session looks like on my pre-wedding photoshoot Winnipeg page.
