A PHOTOGRAPHER'S GUIDE

Getting Married at The Leaf at
Assiniboine Park

Winnipeg Wedding Venues  —  Cody Goetz Photography

The Leaf opened in Assiniboine Park in 2022, and it's already one of the more interesting wedding venues in Winnipeg. I've photographed a full wedding there, a wedding reception there, and more engagement sessions in the biomes than I can count. This is my honest take on what makes it work, and what couples should know before they book.

If you're researching Winnipeg wedding venues more broadly, I've put together a full guide to venues across the city. But if you're already looking at The Leaf, read on.

WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT

Modern Without Being Cold

Most modern venues in Winnipeg are clean and minimal, which is great until you're looking at your photos and everything feels a little flat. Most venues with real visual energy tend to be older buildings, heritage spaces, that kind of thing. The Leaf is the rare exception. It's genuinely modern, and it's also genuinely vibrant. The biomes are lush and tropical and alive. The banquet hall looks directly into the greenery. There's a warmth to the space that doesn't feel forced.

It also reads as luxury without being stuffy. The reception space has serious capacity and a dedicated dance floor, but it doesn't feel like a generic banquet hall. The design intent of the whole building is to make people feel calm and rested, and that comes through, both in the room and in the photos.

It's modern without being cold, and it photographs beautifully no matter where you point a camera. That's not something you get at most venues in Winnipeg.

CEREMONY OPTIONS

Where You Can Get Married

This is where the versatility really shows. Couples have more than one meaningful choice, and each one has a different feel. Most couples choose between the mezzanine and the gardens depending on guest count and time of year.

The Mezzanine

Overlooks the main biome from above. The light is soft and diffused, no harsh shadows, just clean and flattering. Feels intimate even with a full guest list.

Up to 150 guests

The Gardens

Available May long weekend through October. The Grove, Performance Garden, Kitchen Garden, and Johnston Family Seasonal Garden each offer something distinct.

150 to 250+ guests

Inside the Biomes

Private and semi-private bookings available for smaller ceremonies. Private bookings happen outside regular hours. All requests need 15 days notice.

THE RECEPTION

The Main Hall

The main banquet hall holds up to 260 guests seated or 350 for a standing reception. It's a generous space with a dedicated dance floor, which matters more than couples often realize when they're in the planning stages.

One thing worth knowing as you plan your timeline: the main window wall faces west. On clear evenings, you'll get direct sun coming through during dinner. That's beautiful in the right conditions, and it can be tricky if you don't account for it. If you're planning speeches during that window, it's worth thinking about where people will be facing. An experienced photographer will know how to work with it, but it's something to be aware of when you're thinking about table placement and timing.

FROM A PHOTOGRAPHER'S PERSPECTIVE

What It's Like to Photograph Here

The biomes are where I spend the most time with couples, and for good reason. The space is compositionally interesting in a way that most venues aren't. There's depth to work with, things to shoot through, layers of greenery that create natural framing. I have a few favourite spots in there that I've found over multiple sessions, and they're not obvious at first glance, which is part of what makes the space interesting to work in. The space keeps evolving as the plants grow, so there's always something new.

The light inside the biomes requires some knowledge to work well. It's indirect and filtered, which is generally flattering, but can go flat if you're not paying attention. Knowing how to find and use the pockets of better light in there makes a real difference.

Outside, the gardens at The Leaf are a strong option for portraits, and the surrounding park gives you even more to work with. Couples who want to incorporate the English Garden can either drive over or, if time allows, take the trolley through the park. Most of the time, the gardens right at The Leaf plus the biomes give you more than enough variety for a full wedding day.

One couple I photographed there started their day with a first look at the park where they first met, before making their way to The Leaf for the ceremony and reception. It's that kind of flexibility, being able to build a day around what actually means something to you, that makes this part of the city such a strong option. You can see how that day came together in my full blog post on their Leaf wedding.

My approach throughout is the same as it is anywhere: candid, unhurried, focused on what's actually happening rather than manufacturing moments. If that sounds like a good fit, you can read more about how I work on my candid wedding photography page.

THE HONEST TAKE

Is The Leaf Right for You?

It's a genuinely great venue for couples who want something that feels current and considered, but still warm. If you care about how your photos will look, and you don't want something that feels generic, The Leaf is hard to beat in Winnipeg right now. The biomes alone are unlike anything else in the city.

That said, no venue is perfect for every couple. If you're envisioning something very traditional or prefer a heritage feel, The Leaf might not be your space. But if you want modern design, lush greenery, real flexibility in how your day is structured, and photos that look like nothing else in your friends' wedding albums, it's worth a serious look.
